Your Key To San Diego USA 2026

San Diego, Seen from the Water

San Diego does not reveal itself all at once. It waits quietly, patiently for those willing to slow their pace and meet it on its own terms. From the water, the city exhales. The noise fades, the skyline stretches, and what remains feels honest and unguarded. San Diego is a city defined by ease but only for those who understand its timing.

Under sail, San Diego reveals its quieter rituals. California sea lions claim their favorite buoys like seasoned regulars, while harbor seals surface briefly, curious but reserved. Bottlenose dolphins appear without ceremony, riding the bow for a moment before slipping back into the bay. Overhead, brown pelicans skim the surface in disciplined formation – an ancient choreography unchanged by time.

For guests who enjoy understanding the why behind what they see, I occasionally invite a marine naturalist to join us. What appears effortless is, in fact, highly adapted: a seal’s stillness becomes a lesson in breath control; a distant spout offshore signals a migration spanning thousands of miles. Whale encounters here are never promised, only respected. Gray whales pass during winter months, humpbacks arrive with warmer waters, and on rare summer days, even blue whales surface quietly nearby. Sailing without engine noise or pursuit allows these moments to unfold naturally, on the ocean’s terms.

Food, like the sea, is best appreciated close to its source. Aboard, meals are relaxed and intentional seasonal bites, good bread, thoughtfully chosen wine, often enjoyed while the air carries hints of salt, citrus peel, and distant grill smoke drifting in from the working waterfront. On certain mornings, I guide guests to Tuna Harbor Dockside Market before we sail, where local fishermen sell what they’ve caught within the last few days. Conversations here are unhurried; recipes are exchanged as easily as stories. Later, after time on the water, I often send guests to a dining room where a whole local bluefin tuna is broken down tableside an experience that feels ceremonial, generous, and distinctly San Diegan.

As evening approaches, the city’s cultural side comes into view. Anchored near The Rady Shell, dinner is served aboard as music drifts effortlessly across the bay. Glasses are refilled, the skyline glows, and the water reflects it all back. It is refined, unhurried, and deeply local.

History moves quietly alongside us. The Star of India rests along the Embarcadero, still sailing after more than 150 years. The USS Midway stands nearby, a reminder of the city’s naval soul. Passing beneath the graceful blue curve of the Coronado Bridge at sunset best experienced from below often brings conversation to a pause.

What brings all of this together is intention and knowing when not to add more. A Les Clefs d’Or concierge understands when to slow a guest down, when to replace a crowded afternoon with time on the water, and how food, culture, and setting quietly reinforce one another. Seamless timing, discreet coordination, thoughtful pacing these details shape a stay.

San Diego does not perform. It reveals itself gradually and once it does, it has a way of staying with you.

Simona Marciulaityte

I am Simona Marciulaityte, originally from Kaunas, Lithuania, where I was raised among art galleries, my father’s frame shop, and the world of theater. From an early age, I learned that small gestures matter. I remember serving coffee to guests in the frame shop or running across the street to fetch brown sugar. Simple moments that taught me how care, presence, and curiosity make people feel seen.

In 2013, I moved to San Diego and quickly fell in love with the city - its coastline, culture, and the way people from around the world come together. I began my hospitality journey in fine dining, where I developed a deep appreciation for gastronomy and the way food tells a story. Later, working as a personal stylist refined my ability to listen closely, notice subtle details, and adapt with intention. It also taught me the lasting impact of thoughtful follow up -remembering preferences, checking in, and writing handwritten notes that turn service into relationships.

In 2017, I began my concierge career at Fairmont Grand Del Mar under the mentorship of Les Clefs d’Or member Adhara Mereles. In 2024, I joined Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa as Chef Concierge and the same year, I was honored to receive prestigious Les Clefs d’Or Golden Keys.

Together with my team, we take pride in unlocking meaningful experiences and serving as a trusted key to San Diego and to Rancho Valencia.

Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa

Set among the rolling hills and citrus groves of Rancho Santa Fe, Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa is a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star and Relais & Châteaux retreat that values quality over quantity and experience over excess. Spread across more than 40 acres of Spanish Colonial-inspired gardens, the resort offers quiet seclusion while serving as a thoughtful gateway to San Diego’s layered identity.

A limited collection of pink-hued casitas houses fewer than 50 suites, each designed with hand-painted tiles, beamed ceilings, fireplaces, and private garden patios that encourage a slower, more intentional rhythm of stay. Beyond the resort’s acclaimed tennis program, spa, and wellness facilities, guests are invited to explore the destination in meaningful ways.

From sailing San Diego Bay -where water, skyline, and marine life converge-to discovering Coronado Island, the Star of India, the USS Midway Museum, and the iconic Coronado Bridge, past and present unfold naturally. Moments ashore are equally authentic, from witnessing local fishermen return with the day’s catch to tasting bluefin tuna landed only hours earlier.

From a concierge perspective, our role is to open doors to these connections-welcoming guests into Rancho Valencia’s quiet luxury while thoughtfully bridging resort serenity with the pulse of the city
