Vienna, a city celebrated for its imperial elegance and classical music, holds a deeper culinary significance. It’s the only city in the world that has given its name to a unique culinary “genre” – the Viennese cuisine. Its gastronomic landscape is rich, layered and decorated by two UNESCO-listed treasures: the coffee house culture and Vienna’s sausage stands. Yet, what truly encapsulates the essence of Vienna’s diversified cultural identity is the vibrant pulse of its markets. Let me take you on a journey through some of my favourites, including a few lesser-known gems.
After a short 15-minute walk from our hotel (noting that Petersplatz in front of our doors also hosted a snail market in the 17th century) through pedestrian zones and along the famed Ringstraße, flanked by imperial neoclassical buildings, we reach Vienna’s most famous food market – the Naschmarkt. The Secession, the former home of the Jugendstil movement at its gates, as well as distant shouts from market vendors won’t let you miss it. Founded in the late 18th century as a dairy market just outside the city, the Naschmarkt now features over 120 lively stalls, offering everything from fresh and local produce to international delicacies. For exceptional cheese, “Poehl am Naschmarkt” is a must-visit. For the freshest fish in Vienna, head to Umar – a great spot for a market lunch or dinner. On Saturdays, the flea market here is a treasure trove. Take a moment to admire the Art Nouveau facades along the Wienzeile, where hidden gems of architecture await discovery.
Following the Wienzeile further, we arrive at Meidling, where the Meidlinger Markt awaits. It’s delightfully local, a true heart of the „Grätzl“ (=neighbourhood). The lively sound from the chatter of locals (including a bit of its Viennese grumpiness) creates the classic market symphony! Fresh produce attracts you into the stalls, while the rich aromas of international cuisines – from Austrian to Vietnamese – fill the air. Don’t miss „Wirtschaft am Markt“, the only market restaurant in Vienna crowned with a Gault Millau toque: Their spinach dumplings are delightful!
The next market – Vienna’s biggest street market – takes us out to Ottakring, home of Vienna’s biggest brewery, but also one of Vienna’s most multinational market experiences at the Brunnenmarkt! This market was founded at the end of the 18th century around a fountain, which delivered water from the Vienna woods to the imperial palace. Nowadays, the Brunnenmarkt and Yppenmarkt merge together to up to 120 stands on Saturdays and show the melting pot Vienna always has been since the monarchy. Enjoy the oriental influences with all its spices, herbs and smells, which will enchant all your senses! For a classic Austrian treat you have to try a Kärntner Kasnudel (Carinthian Ravioli) at “Kärntnerei”.
Vienna’s markets are more than just places to shop. They are living, breathing reflections of the city’s history, its diversity, and the rhythms of daily life. I look forward to helping you craft your own unforgettable Vienna experience, one that delves deeper into the heart of Vienna.

My name is Gregory – born and raised in Vulkanland Styria, which is about a 1,5 hours drive from Vienna – I connected to the city of Vienna early on and made it my home a few years ago.
Hospitality is somehow part of my genes. My first touch with Les Clefs d’Or was in a Conciergerie course at the Tourism Schools of Bad Gleichenberg. After graduation, I was working at front desks of many renowned resort hotels throughout Austria, while finishing my master studies in Tourism Management.
This educational path led me to two years in hospitality consulting, which gave me the opportunity to participate in the strategic divisions of our industry. But immediately, I noticed that I missed the human connection, as this has always been the factor in work motivating me the most.
Since fully committing to my Concierge passion, I truly discovered my calling and enjoy every day in which I can tailor individual experiences for our valued guests, that make their time with us memorable! Together as a team we can then unlock experiences, create memories, that last a lifetime and build meaningful connections! It’s truly all about being the key to Vienna!
The Rosewood Vienna opened its doors in August 2022 as the first Rosewood property in the German speaking market. Located in the heart of the inner city right next to the St. Peter’s church, the property with its 103 rooms and suites is the perfect starting point for exploring Vienna, as most of the sights are no more than a 15-minute walk away!
Four buildings have been merged to create this wonderful gem, combining home comforts with a strong sense of place! One of the highlights is the Salon Aurelie with its hand painted walls, an oasis of calm and beauty and an excellent spot to enjoy a relaxed cup of coffee with a slice of Guglhupf (Viennese cake).
You can also enjoy one of Vienna’s best Wiener Schnitzels in our marvellous rooftop brasserie Neue Hoheit and end your day with a drink on the terrace, which lets you admire the beautiful surroundings of the inner city from between the rooftops. Not to forget: Our beautiful rooftop Asaya Spa offers relaxing moments away from the cities buzz! My team and I very much look forward to welcoming you soon.
